In 1565 an Irish Vessel was wrecked off the coast of North Meols, came ashore near the Old Pool and broke up. Her cargo was mainly sugar and potatoes, which were washed up in large quantities. From this event came the name “Sugar Hillock”, then a long bank not far above high water mark. The potatoes were used by the Villagers, and an ancient Scottish Encyclopaedia gives this event as the introduction of the potato to England, first grown in a place called the Meales in Lancashire. Sugar Hillock Chapel in Sunny Road, Churchtown, was the first building erected for the Methodists in 1816. Our area is still well known for the growing of potatoes, my Great Grandad and Grandad were both Potato Merchants in Banks Village.
